Clay Pigeon shooting is a sporting competition activity that involves one trying to shoot a clay object that has been fired into the air. The shooter has just a few moments to take aim and fire before the clay flies out of range. Many disciplines of clay shooting evolve around the number of clays being propelled, (single or double shoots), and the firing locations being mixed up randomly to offer maximum competition.
As the name suggests, the clays were once real pigeons until the early 1920s, when such competitions were ruled illegal. Today much of the old terminology still exists, the target is still “the bird”, the hit is still “the kill”, a missed clay is still called “bird away”, and the machine that fires the clays is still referred to as “the trap.”
