Estonian National Opera is the national opera company of Estonia. The company is based at the Estonia Theatre in Tallinn. The theatre has had several names throughout its existence. The latest one is "The Estonian National Opera", which was adopted in 1998.
The company produces a lively and varied season which includes operas, ballet, and operettas/musicals with over 500 people currently working at the Estonian National Opera. Tickets do sell very quickly, so plan your Tallinn weekend break in advance to avoid disappointment. Day 2: TALLINN
After breakfast, a walking city tour of Tallinn, visiting the Old Town of Tallinn - an example of Gothic architecture in the Baltic and Nordic countries. The tour includes Toompea Castle fortifications, the Dome Church (13th century), the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Alexander Nevskij (19th century), Town Hall Square (15th century), the Old Guild, and St.Olaf’s Church. Coffee/tea with cake in the old town restaurant.
Afternonn optional tour to the Kadriorg Park, founded by Russian tsar Peter the Great at the beginning of the 18th century. The total territory of the park is 100 hectares. The main building in the park is the baroque palace, built according to the project of Italian architect Niccolo Michetti. It was the residence of the president of the Estonian Republic before WW II and houses now the Kadriorg Art Museum.
Though big restoration works are underway in the park at the moment, you still enjoy the beauty of it and walk through different styles of it. You will visit the Song Festival Grounds where famous Estonian song festivals with more than 100 thousand singers are held. The tour ends at Pirita, you can have a glimpse of the olympic yachting marina and the ruins of St. Brigitte's Convent.
Later afternonn optional tour of Estonian National Opera House starting befor opera perfomance. The current Estonia house - a representative building in the heart of Tallinn - opened its doors in August 1913. Since 1998, the theater is officially known as the Estonian National Opera. The theater repertoire includes both classical operas, ballets, and operettas as well as modern music and children's plays. In 2006, Estonia as a professional musical theater celebrated its 100th birthday and in 2013, the majestic Estonia building will be 100 years old During the tour you will have possibility to gain an insight into some of the many facilities the Opera House has to offer and what goes on behind the scenes before the curtain rises.
Maybe we can walk out onto the Main Stage, visit the costume workshop or scenery painting room, and possibly even meet a singer or a dancer as we make our way around. You will learn about architecture, stagecraft, opera, and ballet from your knowledgeable tour guide.
